At GiveCorps, we’ve found that projects that incorporate compelling video gain more traction on the site and through social media outlets.   Video is an increasingly important marketing tool for your organization and well worth the time and effort.

In an earlier post, we shared 4 basics to make compelling videos for your cause.  Now, we’re taking it a step further – a lot of your video’s success will rely on capturing the right footage.

So, here are 3 shooting strategies that will hook your audience and keep them engaged:

1.      Shoot video like still shots

Approaching your video like still frame photography will avoid shaky camera syndrome, create more interesting shots, and make editing much easier.

Steve Stockman, author of “How to Shoot Video that Doesn’t Suck”, calls this strategy “Move, point, shoot, stop”.  Allow your subject to  move and create the action.  Then stop shooting, move to a new angle and start again.

As you move your position be sure to hold each shot for at least 10 seconds.  You can always cut extra footage when editing but can never go back and capture these authentic moments.

2.      Apply the rule of thirds

Like in still photography, use the rule of thirds when framing your subject to improve visual appeal.

As you frame your shots, also consider your foreground and background.  Having something in the foreground (in front of your subject) will increase visual appeal.  The background will add context to your shot – but beware of what’s in the background, it could affect your message.

3.      Sequence your shots

Planning a sequence will help you to shoot like still frame and capture great footage.  The sequence will tell your story and deliver the message using a series of tight frame and wide frame shots.

BBC has a 5-shot method of sequencing that is seen often in professional video production.  By considering your sequencing and shooting in shots (using the 10 second rule), your videos will have the same polished and professional feel.

Have fun and be sure to share your organization’s video with us on Facebook or Twitter.
